Traffic was blocked for some time near the busy Abhinav Kala Vidyalaya Chowk on Tilak road yesterday afternoon after a brawl ensued between a few Afghan students and some locals.

The Khadak police rounded up eight Afghan students over a scuffle with the locals after an accident in which a three-year-old boy, Arya, fell down from a motorbike on the road. Ajay Kotkar, a resident of Shukrawar Peth, filed the complaint.

According to the police, an accident happened on afternoon when Kotkar's motorbike hit an Afghan student's moped, leading to the fall of the former's three-year-old son from the bike. The child faintedu00a0 after the fall.

"Fortunately, nothing serious happened to my son but the Afghan student tried to run away in a bid to disown his responsibility," Kotkar said.

A heated exchange between Kotkar with other Afghan students turned into a violent confrontation.

While onlookers joined Kotkar, more Afghan students joined the fight after one of them summoned others over by using his cell phone.

Both groups pelted stones and physically assaulted each other. Those who were hit by the Afghan students were Ajay Kotkar, Nikhil Bothre and Sagar Kotkar. "We asked the police how the foreign students could beat us in such a inhuman way? There were a total 40 students and many of them fled away after beating us," said Kotkar.

The Afghan student, who was on the moped, was later identified as Miraref Sabeq, a 22-year-old student BBM Student from Marathwada College. He was riding the moped without a license. Khadak police detained seven of his friends for questioning. The case was later registered at Swargate police station.u00a0

Police Inspector Rajendra Kadam of Khadak police station blamed Kotkar for the mess. "The Afghan student, on his moped, was riding ahead of Kotkar. When the moped stopped due to the red signal, Kotkar was not able to control his vehicle thereby hitting the rear side of the moped. This resulted in the child falling from the pillion rider's lap."u00a0u00a0
