Magizhchi, the latest single by Bangalore-based band Peepal Tree is an ode to Kabali star Rajinikanth. Comprising Sujay Harthi on vocals, Tony Das on guitars, Praveen Biligiri on bass and Willy Demoz on drums and percussion, the band makes Indian melodies sitting on funk grooves with overtones of electronica, and sung in variety Indian languages.

Magizhchi is Tamil for joy or happiness and the song (in Tamil) talks about the everlasting popularity and love that Rajinikanth evokes and hails him as Thalaivar (the boss).

Magizhchi has an unmistakable hard-rock sound and an infectious celebratory feel to it interspersed with some famous dialogues by the star.

The video showcases some endearing snippets of Rajni fans, his popularity and cult that encompasses generations of fans who wouldn’t let go of the opportunity to enact their favourite hero’s moves.

The idea for the song -- with all its Rajni-powered energy -- exploded in Willy’s head the day he saw the first promo of Kabali. His band members were equally excited about the movie. So began the journey of countless riffs and melodies being exchanged through email and Whatsapp. but nothing matched their idea of the mighty Thalaivar.

“Then, one day, Tony played a riff to Willy and the magic happened,” says Sujay.

So far, Peepal Tree has released six songs, Chetana (Kannada), Tangi, Konevaregu, Bhuviyidu, Nayi Khushi and Roshan-e-Kaafile with Bollywood composer Sandeep Chowta.
