Rough ride: Rafael Nadal's injury record over the years

As former World No 1 pulls out of the upcoming US Open tournament due to a wrist problem, we take a look at the Spaniard’s long list of injuries over the years

Rough ride: Rafael Nadal's injury record over the years


Right wrist injury (2014):
Nadal withdraws from ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournaments at Toronto and Cincinnati due to an injury on his right wrist and later reveals he also won’t play at the US Open, where he is defending champion.  


Right elbow injury (2003):
Misses French Open 


Stomach virus (2013):
Misses Australian Open.

Right knee injury (2010):
Retires in quarter-final of Australian Open against Andy Murray. Off tour until Indian Wells in March. 

Tendinitis in both knees (2009):
After his 31-match winning run at Roland Garros is ended by Robin Soderling in the fourth round, Nadal withdraws from Queen’s and Wimbledon, where he was defending champion due to the injuries. Out for nine weeks in total, loses World No 1 ranking to Roger Federer. 

Back injury (2014):
Takes a month off after being affected by a bad back in his Australian Open final defeat to Stan Wawrinka.

Left foot injury (2006):
The injury, suffered in November 2005, means Nadal only starts the 2006 season in February. 

Left adductor problem (2011):
Complains of problem in his thigh after losing in straight sets in the Australian Open quarter-finals to compatriot David Ferrer. Off tour for two months. 

Left knee tendinitis (2008):
The injury forces Nadal to retire from Paris Masters in the quarter-finals. Spaniard also withdraws from Masters Cup and Davis Cup final.

Tendinitis in left knee (2012):
Rafa loses to World No 100 Lukas Rosol in Wimbledon second round. The injury sees him miss Olympics, where he was defending champion, US Open, World Tour Finals and Davis Cup final. After six months out, cancels plans to play in Abu Dhabi exhibition.

Left ankle injury (2004):
Misses French Open and is off tour for three months.
