The Maharashtra government has mooted a Rs 107 crore plan to protect roads and houses along Mumbai's coastline from damage due to tides and violent winds. The decision was taken at a meeting of the district planning and developing committee held here.

"The aim is to protect roads and buildings from tides and wind which causes maximum damage in areas along the sea," Mumbai's Guardian Minister Nawab Malik said.

Tetrapods would be installed from Colaba to Mahim causeway as they absorb force of the waves and restrict damage, Malik said.
The proposal would be sent to the Centre under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission for final approval, he said.

A provision of Rs 64 crore has been made for overall development of the city including slum rehabilitation, repair of old buildings and school education, the minister said.

It has been decided to reduce rents in MHADA transit camps to make rental accommodation more affordable, he said, adding that tenants would be asked to pay Rs 500 per month instead of the Rs 1700 charged now.
