Even as NCP plans to celebrate extravagantly, political pundits say it's an attention-grabbing gimmick before the upcoming PMC elections

It is NCP President Sharad Pawar's 70th birthday on December 12. His party members are planning to celebrate his birthday by spending a whopping Rs 50 lakh for the same. And it is not even confirmed that Pawar would be present for his extravagant birthday celebration.

Birthday celebrations of major politicians are a power show for all political parties. Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) is no exception. City Mayor Mohansingh Rajpal, an NCP member said that NCP would be spending Rs 50 lakhs on Sharad Pawar's birthday celebrations. Political observers opine that 'Sharadotsav' a four-day extravaganza from December 9 to 12 is being organised keeping in mind the upcoming PMC elections.

Pawar's MP daughter Supriya Sule will inaugurate the show at PMC's Ganesh Kala Krida Manch Auditorium after the culmination of a rally from Tilak Road to Ganesh Krida Manch. Deputy CM Ajit Pawar will be in the city on his uncle's birthday. The 4-day festival will consist of cultural programmes, fashion shows, dance shows amongst other events.

It is reported that Suresh Kalmadi's annual marathon, Congress President Sonia Gandhi's birthday celebrations on December 9 triggered the need to celebrate Sharad Pawar's birthday as power show. All the party workers and NCP corporators, MLAs and MLCs are working hard to make the event a grand success. Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar is also attending the show in Pune.

"We are celebrating Pawar Saheb's birthday in a big way only because this is his 70th birthday and we want to make it an unforgettable event," said Rajpal who is the convener of the event.u00a0 "This is just a party affair. We are spending money from our own pockets to celebrate the birthday. This has nothing to do with PMC. Our party had paid a rent of Rs 1 lakh for the 3 days at the Ganesh Kala Krida Manch Auditorium. I am even ready to show the payment receipt."

Ankush Kakade, NCP spokesperson and former mayor who is organising a Puneri Peshwai Fashion Show under the banner of Ajit Trust and Vishwakarma Creative Eye College at Balgandharv Rangmandir said we are celebrating this grand show without own style. Noted Historian Babasaheb Purandare and city police commissioner Meeran Borwankar are the guest of honour in the show.u00a0

Pawar celebrates his birthday at his native place at Baramati every year. For the past two years he has been coming to the city at his Baramati Hostel. "This year he may come or may not. We are in a mood to celebrate his birthday as big as ever," said Neelesh Nikam, PMC's leader of the house. "This is nothing to do with the political activity of the party," he added.
