RTI plea regarding PCPNDT Act: Just 6 civil hospitals, 6 civic bodies reply

A Right to Information (RTI) application seeking details from the state health and family welfare department regarding cases registered under Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) Act, has received a nugatory response. Only six out of the 35 civil hospitals and six municipal corporations from among the 26 in the state have provided feedback.u00a0

“The health and family welfare department had forwarded my application to all civil hospitals and municipal corporations and asked them to provide the information. I don’t know why it did this as the ministry has the facts. I was shocked to see the dismal response. Also, according to the information revealed most of these corporations have not filed any such cases. I doubt whether they are serious about PCPNDT Act,” said activist Ganesh Borhade.

Documents provided by Borhade also revealed that of the civic bodies in Dhule, Nagpur, Mumbai, Bhivandi-Nijampur, Ahmednagar and Amravati, only the one in Nagpur has provided information, and that too stating that no cases under PCPNDT Act have been filed in the area. Also, among the six civil hospitals that replied, just three have lodged such cases.

While commenting on the issue, Ashram Khade, consultant for the state on PCPNDT Act, said, “Authorities will file a case whenever the need arises. But it is not that whoever have not lodges cases are not doing their job. If there is no violation of PCPNDT Act, then how would anyone file a case pertaining to it?” While commenting on the reply to the RTI application, Khade added, “The concerned authority should have replied to the plea. Why they haven’t should be verified.”
