Officials are having a hard time dealing with the thousands of requests, with the January 15 deadline just hours away

RTO swamped with auto permit renewal

After providing an extension of 15 more days, the Pune Regional Transport Office (RTO) is still unable to tackle the demands of auto rickshaw permit renewal. Yesterday, thousands of auto drivers and owners had crowded the RTO premises.

Currently, the renewal process is progressing both in a computerised way and also manually. Pune RTO had sent notices to 4,700 auto rickshaw owners in the first week of this month, telling them to renew their permits. Most auto drivers are still baffled about the renewal work, which is still pending. Pune RTO handles around 45,000 auto permits, and it doesn’t have any data on how many have been renewed till now. When MiD DAY questioned Pune regional transport officer Ajit Shinde, he said, “Everything is going fine, and we are working hard to renew as many auto permits as possible till January 15. Right now, we do not have any data about how many permits have been renewed.”

Another key point that Shinde clarified to us is that the permits that are not renewed by January 15 will be issued to new people. “Once the procedure is complete, and if we have vacant permits, they will be issued by lottery system in the near future. We cannot keep permits vacant and they can be used by some other auto driver or owner. Already we do not have the authority to give out new auto permits from the state transport department.”

Whereas to clear the extra rush and load of the permit renewal work, the Pune RTO will remain open on January 14, Tuesday also even it is a public holiday for Eid-E-Milad.

Ashok Ghadge one of the auto driver told Mid Day, “I am coming to RTO from last one week for permit renewal work, every time they demand for a new document. There is heavy crowd and if we got to any agent for help they ask for double money to get the work done.”

Another auto owner Prakash Miraje said, “My auto permit renewal is pending since last six months. When I go to the renewal counter, they say that your details are not updated on the new ‘Vahan’ system and it is been process. It is the fault of RTO administration and I am suffering from it.”
