Con artists held for exchanging valuables with fake gold beads

A whole handful of gold beads in exchange for just 10 grams of gold is an offer that many will find hard to resist. Relying on the human weakness for the yellow metal, con artists are coming up with newer tricks to relieve the gullible of their valuables, as seen in the case of a woman and daughter-in-law duping at least two people out of their jewellery recently.

Reena Soni and her mother-in-law Shantaben were arrested and a case was lodged against them for tricking an elderly woman to part with her gold chain in exchange for gold beads that turned out to be fake. The two were caught by the Hadapsar police with fake gold beads on July 9, after which the police began investigating whether the two had cheated other people as well. And the police did come across one more case of the kind.
A 40-year-old woman had filed a complaint at Swargate Police station regarding a similar case.

Sujata Keramkonda was allegedly cheated by Soni, who tricked her into parting with her gold chain in exchange for 220 fake gold beads. During her interrogation, Soni confessed to having cheated a 40-year-old woman living on Bibvewadi-Kondhwa Road. Investigative officer PSI B K Chavan then approached the woman, who confirmed the incident and said she had not lodged a police complaint out of fear.

On July 3, at 11 am a woman had come to Keramkonda's residence with the more than 200 gold beads and asked her if she knew any jeweller as she wanted to exchange the gold for cash. The woman, who was in her twenties, succeeded in winning Keramkonda's confidence.

Keramkonda fell in the woman's trap and exchanged her gold chain weighing close to 10 grams for the beads.
The case has been handed over to the Swargate police. API A P Koli is investigating it further. Somni and her mother-in-law have been remanded in police custody.

"The duo originally belong to Kathiyawad region of Gujarat and they are involved in cheating activities. We are investigating whether they have cheated more such people in the past," said PSI Chavan.
