It took divine intervention for the reportedly missing 19-year-old Akshay Meshram, a first year MBBS student of BYL Nair Hospital, who had gone missing since September 22 to return home. It was only after visiting Shirdi for Sai Baba's darshan, did Akshay decide that it was time to head home and by yesterday evening, was back with his family at their Gadchiroli residence, ending the 12-day long agonising wait for the Meshrams.

When contacted, Akshay said that he would be resuming college soon. "Life to sali kitni bhi tough ho kat jayegi, dosto hamesha sath rehna zindagi sali badal jayegi," was Akshay's last status update on Facebook before his disappearance.

After Akshay reached home, his father Ashok, immediately called up hostel warden Dr Sandeep Bhete, and informed him about his son's return. It was Ashok who disclosed the news that his son had been to Shirdi before coming home. "His father was crying over the phone," said Dr Bhete, adding that he was happy to hear about Akshay's return.

"He is my friend and I knew he would keep his promise that he will return home. Yesterday, I received a message from him wishing me a happy birthday. He also said that he would be coming home," said an elated Hemant Jawale, Akshay's friend and a classmate.

Policespeaks
"He has reached home safely. We have asked the Meshram family not to interrogate him about the past two weeks and behave normally with him," said senior police inspector Pravin Gosavi, adding that they will speak to Akshay after a few days.

Case history
After Akshay went missing, his family along with the hospital authorities filed a complaint at Agripada police station on September 23. While the police kept a tab on Akshay's cellphone activities to pinpoint his location, the Meshram family visited all their relatives and friends' homes in search of their boy. Last Thursday, Ashok along with Akshay's cousin, Dr Piyush Bawane, even visited Punes' Rajguru Nagar, after the cops informed them that Akshay's phone was last used here. However, their trip was futile.

Still missing
Last December, Satyendra Singh, a first year MBBS student had gone missing from the same hostel. However, the police are yet to trace him.
