Saif Ali Khan's 'Kalakandi' affected by 'Chef' debacle, to release digitally?

The dismal performance of Saif Ali Khan-starrer Chef, despite winning accolades from critics, has hampered the release of the actor's next, Kalakandi. After having missed its September 8 release date, the Akshat Verma-directed drama, we hear, will now only release on the digital platfor.

A source tells mid-day, "After struggling to find a distributor for the film due to Saif's previous debacles, it's unlikely that the film will see the light of day soon. In fact, the makers have decided to release it digitally after a few months. In all likelihood, it will screen on Netflix."

Kalakandi producer Ashi Dua however quashes the suggestions, stating that the team is zeroing in on a date, but is struggling to procure one given the array of films lined up in the upcoming months. "Unfortunately, most dates in November and December are taken. But, the film will have a theatrical release for sure. We have got a clearance from the Censor Board."

Should the film hit theatres, it will only acquire limited screens, a production unit says. The source also states that the film's rights have already been sold to digital platform. "The producers haven't ruled out a theatrical screening, but, a major digital release is being considered," the source says, further adding that the film's unique concept makes it a tough sale to distributors.

One part of the trio of sub-plots in Kalankandi sees Khan as an ailing man, living in denial of his impending death. "The distributors' opinion remains conservative, and they presume that a film like this one, will not be a draw."
