Sixth seeded Saina was leading 21-3, 13-5 when Yip retired 20 minutes into the third-round match.

The Indian will next face the winner of the match between China's third seed Xin Wang and Bulgarian Petya Nedelcheva.

Saina has bowed out of the Worlds at the quarter-final stage in the previous two editions.

"In 2009 I was suffering from chicken pox and didn't get much time to train but this time, I have trained for more than a month and in the best shape. Hopefully I will play well. I am happy to make it to the quarters," said Saina

Others falter
In men's singles, Ajay Jayaram gave a scare to sixth seded Jin Chen of China before losing 21-18, 12-21, 11-21.

The Indian to the world number six after a hour-long battle.

In mixed doubles, Jwala Gutta and V Diju went own to Joachim Fischer Nielsen and Christinna Pedersen 9-21, 15-21.
