Anticipating violence in the run-up to the BMC elections, leaders have coughed up a large sum to buy Mediclaim policies for 150 committed party workers

In an initiative that is the first of its kind, the Shiv Sena has insured the health of a large number of its party workers, who are ready to rub shoulders against their political rivals in the upcoming BMC elections.

About 150 Shiv Sainiks in Andheri Shakha no 76 have been covered by personal Mediclaim policies worth
Rs 1 lakh each.

On the occasion of Yuva Sena head Aditya Thackeray's birthday, Sena Executive President Uddhav Thackeray distributed around Rs 1.5 crore for the health policies of the Shiv Sainiks on Monday

Anticipating violence in the run-up to the BMC elections next year, the party's office-bearers and active members have been assured that their medical bills will be taken care of in case of any untoward incident.

Shakha Pramukh Sandip Naik has reportedly coughed up an exorbitant amount, to the tune of Rs 1.5 crore for the health policies, which were distributed among the party workers by President Uddhav Thackeray on Monday, to mark the occasion of Yuva Sena head Aditya Thackeray's birthday.

Speaking to MiD DAY, Naik said, "The Mediclaim policy will take care of all the medical hazards that the party workers may run into. They need not worry about the bills."

Shiv Sena zonal chief Advocate Anil Parab said, "This is part of our initiative to ensure the welfare of our party men, who offer their unstinted support and services in every single circumstance. Such measures help strengthen the bond between the party leaders and the party workers."

Parab added that the Shiv Sena had earlier provided health policies the Shakha Pramukh, but never for lower level office bearers.

Ironically, it was Naik, the incumbent Shakha Pramukh, who had to foot hefty medical bills in 2009 after sustaining injuries during Shiv Sena's protest against high power tariffs.

The move has been welcomed by the party workers, a majority of whom hail from lower income groups.

Asked about the funding for the policy premiums, Naik said, "The premiums for the policies are extremely affordable at the shakha level.
