Saint's 565th birth anniversary marked

A first-of-its-kind event was recently organised in Navi Mumbai when the 565th birth anniversary of polymath Srimanta Sankardev, who is a respected figure in the state of Assam. The programme was jointly organised by Assam Association, Mumbai and Srimant Sankardev Sangha, Assam.

The main objective of the celebrations was to promote and raise awareness about the scholar’s work, whose literary and artistic contributions have become living traditions in the northeastern state.


The two-day event, held on October 26 and October 27, was held at Bunts Centre at Sector 24, Juinagar. Speaking to MiD DAY, Deepen Rajkonwar, general secretary of Assam Association said, “The programme began with a seminar on the life and teachings of the saint. Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev was also a poet, playwright, and a social reformer. He is a figure of importance in the cultural and religious history of Assam. Our aim was to showcase the indigenous culture of our state.” The seminar was followed by a dance and drama programme.

The following morning saw a cultural procession from Assam Bhavan in Sector 30A, Vashi to Jain temple in Sector 9, Vashi. During the walk, community members performed traditional dances of Assam like the Bihu, and also sang naamprosonha, meaning bhajan, or devotional songs.

The event saw hundreds of devotees, scholars and intellectuals from Assam in attendance, besides devotees from various nodes of Navi Mumbai, Thane and Mumbai. On both days, members relished a traditional Assamese feast.
