Posing as a DTH service salesman, youth stole a cheque from her book, forged sign for money
A youth, posing as a Direct To Home (DTH) service salesman, duped 80-year-old Indumati Dhayareshawar of Rs 70,000 on Friday afternoon at Rakshak Nagar in Sangavi, Pimpri Chinchwad.

The suspect, Pravin Bhoir (20), allegedly stole a blank cheque while he was at her residence. “On Friday afternoon, Bhoir knocked on the door of Dhayareshwar, who was alone at home, and introduced himself as an employee of a private DTH service provider,” said police inspector Shantaram Tayde of Sangavi police station. “He told her that the company was giving an annual subscription for Rs 485 only and customers could avail the service by paying Rs 74 as down payment.”
Bhoir also showed his employee identity card to the complainant and told her to bring her chequebook as the company only accepted payments through cheque. To earn the trust of the lady, he showed her similar cheques of Rs 74 that he had ‘collected’ from other society members.
“Dhayareshwar got the chequebook and signed a cheque for Rs 74. Bhoir asked her to get some documents and when she went inside, he stole a blank cheque from the chequebook,” said Tayde.
Later on, Bhoir forged Dhayareshwar’s signature on the blank cheque and withdrew Rs 70,000 from her bank account in Deccan Gymkhana branch on Saturday.
“Since the official who cleared the cheque did not verify the signature of the original account holder, he has also been made accused in the case,” said Tayde.
According to Sangavi Police, the suspect, posing as Pravin Bhoir, is wanted in two similar cases in Bund Garden, where he used the same modus operandi and duped two senior citizens to the tune of Rs 33,500 on March 22.
“He approached Jyoti Jethmalani and GG Chainani and withdrew Rs 18,500 and Rs 15,000 respectively from their banks using stolen cheques,” added Tayde. The suspect was seen wearing a red cap in a CCTV grab from footage of one of the banks but his face was not visible. A hunt is still on for the youth and police have warned the citizens to stay alert regarding such cons.u00a0
