On Wednesday night, the Indian external affairs ministry said that his condition was "serious and critical".

A late night tweet posted by Indian external affairs ministry spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin said: "Sarabjit Singh's medical situation remains 'serious and critical' as per update provided to Indian officials in Lahore at 10 pm local time."

Earlier Wednesday, Pakistan acceded to India's request for daily consular access to Sarabjit Singh.

India also made a fervent appeal to Pakistan to release Sarabjit Singh or at least to shift him to a third country for "proper treatment".

Sarabjit's family said that should be given the stature of a "shaheed" or martyr.

The family - sister Dalbir Kaur, Sarabjit's wife Sukhpreet Kaur and daughters Swapandeep and Poonam - arrived in New Delhi Wednesday night from Amritsar.
