Save your Sundays for a chess challenge over beer

Maharashtra has been producing chess players since 1921 and they have often become champions, from Abhijit Kunte to the recent sensation, Shardul Gagare. If you want to match up to their intelligence, participate in the Amateur Chess Championship titled Pawnstars. The challenge will be held at three taprooms of Doolally (Andheri, Bandra and Kemp's Corner). So yes, there will be beer to enhance your thinking power.

The organisers are looking at chess enthusiasts' involvement in this competitive initiative. The event will be conducted on all Sundays in January. The qualifiers will be carried out in the Swiss league format - it will end with a knockout. Chess masters Rakesh Kulkarni and Ketan Boricha, who are internationally rated FIDE chess players, will be the arbiters. The latter is also coach to 12-year-old city-based wonder chess kid, Shrayan Majumder. The amateur chess player loiters around the Internet to challenge people; he goes by the name Tricky Mate and last year, he beat Russian champion Max Dlugy that led to him begin a rage on social media. Kulkarni is also one of the most respected arbiters and a trainer in the domestic chess circuit.

The final round will be held at Kemp's Corner on January 29. Winners will earn respect, prizes and, of course, beer for participating.
