The errant driver, Somnath Rambhau Bhintade, was arrested yesterday by Kondhwa police. The deceased has been identified as Alisha Shahid Khan, a resident of Pandharinagar in Handewadi.
Her friend Vaishnavi Sanjay Kadam (13), a resident of Pisoli, has been admitted to a private hospital. The girls were studying at Hill Green School, and were on their way home when the mishap took place.
“Vaishnavi has sustained serious injuries to her legs and doctors are performing a surgery to minimise the damage,” said her father. Bhintade had fled from the spot after the accident took place at around 2pm on Monday afternoon.
Businessman Akhtar Peerzade, who was present at the spot when the accident happened, told MiD DAY that the girls were walking down the road when the speeding tanker came and hit them.
Alisha came under the rear wheels, which ran over her stomach. Vaishnavi received grievous injuries to her legs. Peerzade and others took the victims to local hospitals.
“We saw the tanker driver fleeing from the spot, but we gave priority to saving the lives of the girls. I took Alisha to Inamdar hospital in my car. Other local accompanied Vaishnavi to Jehangir hospital,” Peerzade said.
According to police, the tanker first hit a two-wheeler and then hit the girls. Alisha’s brother Shahbaz was also with her, but escaped injuries. Furious local residents deflated the tyres of the tanker, after the driver ran away.
