These are few lines from a new pledge school students in the city are taking during their morning assembly sessions from Monday. The education department has ordered all schools to observe the Electricity Safety Week, following the guidelines by the Energy Department. Officials from the department, as well as from private electricity service providers, will be visiting schools this week educating children on the safe and appropriate use of electricity.

Schools and parents have welcomed the move. Prashant Redij, principal of Hilda Castelino High school, Kandivli, said, “Students are our next generation and giving them required knowledge about safe and appropriate use of electricity is the need of the hour. The oath to students, and activities such as discussions with experts are helping them get right answers to their questions. This is helping schools also to improve. In our school we have changed from traditional tubelights to energy saver and safe bulbs.”
Agreeing with Redij, Ujwala Zare, principal of G H High school and Junior College, Borivli, said, “While schools keep doing such extra-curricular activities, with a government order, it has become mandatory, and more schools will conduct such awareness initiatives. After all schooling is beyond books and curriculum for holistic development of children.”
The parent of a Std VI student from New English School, Manisha Surve, a resident of Dadar, said, “Such activities add value to children’s schooling. Certain things if told by a school teacher have more effect on children than if taught at home.”
