Geoff Boycott, a master technician in his day, is the last person to hail an unorthodox player. But it's different when it comes to Virender Sehwag, the number one batsman in world cricket.
"I watch him bat and it seems as though he sees the shot even before the bowler has bowled. It is quite extraordinary," said Boycott as Sehwag won the Test batting prize for the second year running in the ESPNcricinfo awards. Boycott was one of the members of the jury which included MiD DAY columnist Ian Chappell, Tony Greig, David Lloyd, Ramiz Raja, Daryll Cullinan and Sanjay Manjrekar.
"It is extraordinary to watch him play. I have seen some people score quickly and get big scores, said Boycott.
"Part of the time it is brute force, but not so with him. It is just simplicity itself. He doesn't play with great power; it is grace, timing and effortless ease, and his range of shots is quite exciting."
Sehwag played his role in India's win over SA in the first ODI in Jaipur on Sunday. He scored 46 before being run out. His partner Sachin Tendulkar was run out too.
