The Indian cricket team has been grappling with a major injury worry after Virender Sehwag ruptured his right knee during the match against South Africa in Nagpur last week.

MiD DAY has learnt that the swashbuckling opening batsman's knee is still swollen and would not practice today.

However, he is expected to be fit for India's final Group B game against the West Indies here on Sunday.

After the tie in Nagpur, Sehwag had gone to Mumbai to treat his knee and received an injection. Team physio Nitin Patel accompanied him.

For Sehwag, this is the third injury he has suffered during the World Cup.

On February 25, the 32-year-old batsman was hit on the rib cage while batting in the nets ahead of the clash against England in Bangalore. He rushed to Delhi to consult his doctor after the match on February 27.

Earlier, he hurt his left thigh when batting against Bangladesh. He continued to bat with a runner and went on to post a record-equalling and his highest ever ODI score of 175. Sehwag had fitness issues before the tournament as well. The 'Nawab of Najafgarh' returned home midway through the tour of South Africa, skipping the ODI series and the one-off T20 International, following a shoulder injury. He flew to Germany to consult medical experts and was declared fit in time for the World Cup.
