Serena is the inspiration!

Serena Williams’ love for attention and controversial ways belies the true champion in her.

On Saturday, she clinched her fifth Wimbledon singles title and waited for her moment of triumph to give the world a better idea of what she really went through a couple of years ago.

Her illness that centred around blood clots not only kept her out of the game for a year before last year’s Wimbledon, but fractured her spirit, something which Serena didn’t shy away from admitting. “Every title is special, but this one is definitely super-special because it’s a huge comeback for me. There was a moment I just remember I was on the couch and I didn’t leave it for two days. I was praying, like I can’t take any more. I’ve endured enough. I was just so tired at that point,” she told the media.

After beating Poland’s Agnieszka Radwanska on Saturday evening, Serena teamed up with sister Venus to beat Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka for the doubles crown.

There’s no reason why Serena’s saga shouldn’t be as inspirational as fellow American Lance Armstrong, who overcame cancer to be a winner on the cycling circuit again. Or fellow tennis player Leander Paes, who recovered from a cancer scare and continues to be one of India’s most amazing sportsmen. And by the way, cricketer Yuvraj Singh’s conquest of cancer looks all set to join these greats.

Serena’s self-belief, grit and sporting composure cannot be measured and her return to bag another Grand Slam title borders on the inexplicable.

Probably, the ebb and flow of their trade makes it easier for sportspersons to accept the dark, and soldier on to see the light of day. But it’s still bloody hard physically and mentally!

Indeed, Serena has lived through the highs and endured the lows in the most admirable way. Much to the delight of her admirers, Serena insists she’s not done yet.
