Isn't it a wonder that such a vast system actually works? Our first bit of advice? Enjoy the ride!
Carry enough of small change. Tea, coffee, soup, samosas, chops there will be lot of pesky vendors selling wares you will surely feel tempted to buy.
Like reading late into the night? You have to book yourself an air conditioned (AC) two tier or a First Class AC compartment, since most of your co-passengers will want lights off by 10 pm.

Lock your possessions. At practically every station you will find vendors selling chains and padlocks. Be sure to invest in them so that you can chain your luggage to the berth.
If travelling alone, state a preference for side upper or lower berths. Not only are you assured of a window seat, you also have to deal with lesser people.
Don't accept anything to eat or drink offered by strangers.
Bring earplugs or good earphones. Every compartment comprises at least two loud snorers and three wailing babies. Earphones are the only way you can block out unwanted noise, or chatty co-passengers.
