Sexual assault on Mumbai woman reminiscent of horrifying Delhi gangrape

In a chilling reminder of the December 16 gang rape, medical reports of the 40-yr-old woman raped last week in Mulund have proved that her attackers violated her with a wooden stick

The gang rape of a 40-year old woman by nine men near Mulund Colony on Saturday has brought back the horrifying memories of the Delhi gang rape.

Soon after regaining consciousness, the survivor made some shocking revelations on how the nine accused took turns to violate her in an ordeal that stretched on for over one-and-a-half hours. Besides causing external injuries by biting her, the rapists rammed a long stick inside her when she protested, she revealed to Mulund police officials, who are now investigating the case. Medical reports have now confirmed the brutalities that she was subjected to.

In her statement, the survivor had revealed to them that while she was being raped by one of the accused, another one forced her into oral sex. Around 25 injuries were found on her body.

According to police officials, seven of the nine accused in the case have been arrested. The arrested accused have been identified as Ajay Gechand, Mahesh Maragaje, Wahid Shaeikh, Vasim Sheikh, Dastagir Khan, Manpreetsingh Gill and Bhuvan Hamal. Vishal Sood and Viru have been on the run since the time of the crime.

The woman told the cops, “As the pain got unbearable and I began to protest, the rapists inserted a wooden stick inside me to teach me a lesson. I started bleeding profusely and fainted. The next thing I can remember is waking up to the sun falling on my face. I somehow pushed myself to the Mulund police station.”

“She had been raped by two groups. First, a group of six men pulled her out of the tempo where she was sleeping and took her to a shed nearby to rape her. Then, while she was semi-conscious, another trio took her on their motorcycle to the forested area of Ram Nagar in Mulund. Here, the rape was more brutal,” said an officer from Mulund police station. Though the accused have been arrested, the survivor is yet to ascertain the exact roles of each of them in the crime.

The survivor hails from Nandurbar district in Maharashtra. She came to Mumbai three months ago in search of employment, and was making ends meet as a rag picker. She had to sleep on the streets as she didn’t have a roof over her head.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Vasant Tajne of Mulund division said, “The medical reports have confirmed the brutal incident. Meanwhile, the stick that was inserted into her has also been recovered and we have sent it for forensic tests. Seven of the nine accused have been arrested, and they have been booked on charges of rape and sexual assault.”

The accused have been booked under sections 366 (kidnapping, abducting or inducing woman to compel her marriage), 376 (2) (J), 376 (2) (L), 376 (D), 377 (unnatural sex), 342 (wrongful confinement), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means) and 120 (B) (conspiracy) of the IPC.

The arrested accused have been remanded in police custody. The police have also revealed that Vishal Sood and Manpreetsingh Gill are affiliated to political parties, while Wahid Sheikh is an externed criminal.u00a0
