The outcome of Sunday’s emergency working committee meeting of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is being viewed as some sort of a setback for Sharad Pawar’s camp when N Srinivasan reportedly overruled the suggestion of appointing Niranjan Shah, one of BCCI’s vice-presidents and senior-most office-bearers as interim president.

Srinivasan smartly negated Pawar’s faction by joining hands with Jagmohan Dalmiya. This partnership is likely to play a crucial role when Srinivasan completes his two-year term as BCCI boss in September.

According to a close, the NCP chief will be more determined to win the forthcoming elections of the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA). For the record, Pawar has still not stated clearly whether he will contest for the MCA top post against Dilip Vengsarkar, who went down to late Vilasrao Deshmukh in the last election.

“Pawar’s faction was sidelined in the all-important Chennai meeting on Sunday. He is not someone who would accept defeat. So, he will be keen to win his MCA post first and then call the shots in the BCCI,” the source said.

He also said that Sunday’s BCCI meeting would not have any bearing on Pawar’s decision to contest the MCA polls. “As on today, he is still keen to contest the MCA elections. Holding an official position in an association makes a lot of difference in Board politics. You have to be a top official to get respect in the BCCI,” he said.

Pawar has often maintained that he wouldn’t like to contest elections anymore. “That’s all in the past. Politics is quite dynamic in nature. He is capable of coming to an understanding with Vengsarkar to get elected unopposed as MCA president. Anything can happen,” the source said.u00a0
