Sheena Bora case: Indrani Mukerjea's lawyer seeks court nod to meet her

Indrani Mukerjea's lawyer on Saturday moved a local court seeking permission to meet her in J J hospital, where she is undergoing treatment for alleged drug overdose, after she wasn't allowed to see her.

Lawyer of Indrani Mukherjea, who is in an unconscious state at a hospital in Mumbai after allegedly consuming an overdose of drugs, was not allowed to meet her and enquired about her health from the JJ Hospital Dean.

According to hospital sources, Indrani's counsel Gunjan Mangla met JJ Hospital Dean Dr T P Lahane, who apprised her about the condition of 43-year-old Indrani. The meeting lasted for about 30 minutes after which the lawyer left the hospital without making any comment to media.

She was not allowed to meet Indrani, who, according to Lahane is in a semi-conscious state and will be under treatment and observation for three more days. JJ hospital doctors have been provided prison records which showed that Indrani was allegedly taking anti-epilepsy medicines since September 11.

Lahane said Indrani's stomach wash has been collected and will be sent for forensic analysis to conclusively determine if she consumed the drugs. "Necessary blood and urine tests were carried out and a team of CBI officials was also briefed on her medical condition," another doctor at the hospital said.

Acting on the plea, Magistrate R V Adone sought a report from the state-run medical facility in Byculla on health condition of Indrani and adjourned the hearing till next week.

During the hearing, the CBI told the court they have just taken over the case from Mumbai Police. The central agency said their investigation is at an initial stage and the gravity of the offence is very serious.

It is suspected that Indrani went into depression after learning about the demise of her mother in Guwahati on Tuesday.

Indrani, wife of media baron Peter Mukerjea, was arrested by Khar police on August 25 for her alleged role in the murder of Sheena, her daughter from an earlier marriage, in 2012. Sheena, 24, daughter of Indrani, was allegedly kidnapped from outside National College in Bandra and strangled to death in a car by Indrani, her former second husband Sanjeev Khanna and driver Shyamvar Rai.

On October 2, Maharashtra Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis has ordered an inquiry into the circumstances leading to the hospitalisation of Indrani. The probe will cover all angles including lapses on the part of the authorities at the Byculla women jail, where she was lodged under judicial custody. The inquiry will also find out if she had accumulated pills beyond the prescribed numbers, and. if so, how this happened.

Meanwhile, Sanjeev Khanna's lawyer Shreyansh Mithare said there was no security threat for his client lodged in Arthur Road jail. "Khanna is lodged in high-security cell and therefore there is no security issue for him," he said. The case has seen several twists and turns ever since the investigation began in mid-August following the arrest of Indrani, her former husband Sanjeev Khanna and driver Shyamvar Rai.
