Armed assailants shot at former city president of Ambernath Municipal Corporation Arvind Walekar of the Shiv Sena and three of his bodyguards by barging into the shakha (office) at Shivaji Chowk in Ambernath yesterday.
The four gunmen, according to police, entered the shakha at 9.40 pm and started firing indiscriminately at Walekar and his bodyguards -- Shyamsunder Yadav, Imam Shaikh and Rakesh Sharma -- which resulted in the death of Yadav. Police further informed that Yadav in the ensuing gun battle managed to kill one of the assailants before succumbing to his wounds while being rushed to the hospital.
Walekar, along with one of his bodyguards, is recuperating at a local nursing home in Ambernath while the other bodyguard Shaikh has been rushed to KEM hospital and is in a critical condition.
Police said that they are yet to identify the deceased gunman who has been killed in the firing. Also as per the eyewitness, some bystanders saw the shooters leaving the crime spot in an Innova.
Soon after that, cops imposed nakabandis across the area and the outskirts of the city in search of the vehicle.
Walekar held the post of president of Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation from 1999 to 2005 in Ambernath.
He was accused of killing Union leader Naresh Gaikwad from Ambernath on November 8, 2002. However, recently the court had discharged him from the case.
