Close on the heels of the Supreme Court confirming the death sentence on 26/11 Mumbai attack convict Ajmal Kasab, the Shiv Sena today sought immediate intervention of President Pranab Mukherjee to ensure his early execution.
"We seek immediate intervention of your Excellency to ensure that the judgement of the Supreme Court in the case of Mohammed Qasab is given effect to immediately," Shiv Sena Parliamentary party said in a letter to Mukherjee.
The Shiv Sena said it was the considered view of the party that there was no scope of any clemency or pardon in cases where any terrorists were held guilty of waging war against the nation. "The course of justice and execution of the sentence awarded by the Supreme Court should, in such cases, be followed as a matter of course," Sena MPs said in the letter.
They said a perception was gaining ground that India was a soft state. "The terrorists treat us as safe target. This perception needs to change," the letter said.
They said that in spite of the Supreme Court decision in the 2001 Parliament attack case, the convict Afzal Guru of the crime was yet to be brought to justice.
The letter was signed by Anant Geete, Sanjay Raut, Anandrao Adsul, Chandrakant Khaire, Bharatkumar Raut, Anil Desai, Bhawana Gawali, Subhash Wankhede, Ganeshrao Dudhgaonkar, Gajanan Babar and Bhausaheb Wakchaure.
