Shrikant Mundhe stepped foot on English soil on April 20th this year with the sole intention of learning fresh batting techniques and fine-tuning his bowling too. Within four months, the Maharashtra cricketer has not just blossomed, but also created history by becoming the first Liverpool Competition Premier League bowler to take 10 wickets in an innings.

Mundhe turned hero for his club Colwyn Bay recently when he decimated Birkenhead Park's batting attack and emerged with figures of 10-85 in 24.1 overs. The Nanded-born ace is the only player to achieve the feat since the Premier Division was formed in 1999. "The guys told me about it. I always dreamt of holding a record. We have tougher opponents in the league, so I was really happy," Mundhe, who made his debut for Maharashtra during the Ranji Trophy in 2007, told mid-day from London on Monday.

Mundhe magic
The 27-year-old did not just work wonders with the red cherry but also weaved his magic with the willow. Colwyn could have easily lost the match, but thanks to their overseas star's unbeaten 44, the side scraped home with a one-wicket win chasing 169 after being down 126-8 at one point. "I was a little tired after bowling because it was a warm day, but I knew something special was going to happen. I knew this was going to be a once in a while effort so I pushed myself," he added.

Mundhe doesn't wish for his feat to be blown out of proportion. Surprisingly, the excitement dipped when asked if his success could be his claim to fame and one which may attract Team India selectors. "I don't know, man. I don't want to create any sort of controversies. But I wish the 10-for could help me earn an Indian cap," he said.

Domestic tasks
Mundhe hopes his record can inspire more players from his state to work harder. "I just want to play for Maharashtra now. I hope this record can inspire Maharashtra players to work more. In this year's Duleep Trophy, not even a single Maharashtrian player made it. Maharashtra just needs to win the Ranji Trophy and things will fall in place," Mundhe added. Elaborating on lessons learnt playing for the English side, Mundhe said, "English conditions help my batting more than the bowling. My stint here has taught me to be a leader as my team banks on me. I am learning how to lead from the front," added Mundhe.
