Sidharth Malhotra points out he is too selfish to be envious of girlfriend Alia Bhatt's success and more in a candid chat

Sidharth Malhotra: Alia and I have gone beyond being just friends

In a tell-all interview less than a month ago, Alia Bhatt had said that slut shaming is the reason why Indian actresses avoid talking about their relationships. "I don't want to be in a position where they come after me because I broke up with a dude," she had said. Beau Sidharth Malhotra, however, doesn't agree with her on that one.

One can gauge that his faith in the youth is unwavering when he says, "Today, we live in different times. These days, people are more accepting of relationship statuses or, for that matter, sexual preferences. There was a time when acting as a profession wasn't considered respectable for women. But the small-thinking people are a handful. As young actors, we cater to the youth who don't mind our friendships and relationships."

So why does he fear professing his love for Alia before the world? Sidharth blames it on his middle-class upbringing where dating diaries are best kept locked. "Since I didn't grow up in and around the film industry, the rumours and the attention towards my personal life is something I am still struggling to come to terms with. I take it with a pinch of salt because it is part and parcel of being a Bollywood actor. Of course, Alia and I have a terrific bond because of the number of films we have done together. We have been friends for a long time. Over the years, we have gone beyond being just colleagues and friends. You are bound to have an emotional connect when you spend so much time with someone. But, at its core, Alia and I share a deep friendship that remains unaffected by what's written about us and what people say."

Since Alia and he began their careers together with 'Student Of The Year' (2012), a sense of competition is inevitable, especially after the rave reviews she got for her performance in 'Udta Punjab'. But Sid insists he is too selfish to have a mean bone in his body.

"Alia and I never had a sense of competition even when we started off. We began from ground zero. Yes, competition is an integral part of any industry. But, I was the chosen one who made it big from among lakhs of common people, who lust to be a part of the glam world. I am never intimidated by colleagues or friends, be it Alia or Varun Dhawan. I don't envy their choices or their success. I am selfish like that. I care only about my work and whether I am better than my last film. As actors, our only focus should be on improving our craft," Sidharth signs off.
