Sidhu beats up guard at toll gate, triggers row

BJP MP and former cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu assaulted a security guard at a toll gate in Andhra Pradesh's Nellore district after the latter threw his stick at his car damaging the windowshield.

Police said they have not registered a case as the matter was solved amicably.

The guard threw his stick at the car, damaging its rear windshield.

Sidhu and the car driver allegedly thrashed the guard, forced him to sit in the car and took him to Venkatachalam town where they handed him over to police.

The family of the guard and local people condemned the MP's attitude and demanded police action against him.

Sidhu was on his way to attend a programme organised by Swarna Bharathi Trust, owned by senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader M. Venkaiah Naidu.

After attending the programme at Venkatachalam near Nellore town, the MP triggered another controversy on the national highway by forcing three trucks carrying buffaloes and cows for slaughter to stop.

He staged a 'sit-in' on the highway near Manubolu, demanding that police free the cattle and take action against the transporters.

Senior police officials rushed to the scene where a group of villagers had also gathered demanding action against Sidhu for assaulting the guard. The police later seized the trucks and registered a case against the transporters.

Sidhu, who later left for Tirupati, told the police that the guard threw the stick despite being informed that an MP was travelling in the car.

Denying that he thrashed the guard, the former cricketer said his driver made the guard sit in the car and he was handed over to police.
