The latest coastal shack at Kothrud has its heart in the right place and tries to provide a wholesome experience

It's clean, white and simple. Started by an enthusiastic fresh-faced boy with a passion for seafood, The Coastal Shack mainly serves seafood with limited options of mutton, chicken and egg and even lesser vegetarian fare (unless you count the breads). And that's exactly the way it should be.

Prawns Bhujna and Kolambi Bhaat

We rubbed our palms in glee at theu00a0 varieties of seafood on the menu and took our time placing an order. The menu predominantly offers prawns, pomfret, rawas, surmai and shell-fish (depending on availability). You can have them in various avatarsu00a0-- fry, dry, with a thick gravy or as au00a0 Goan / Mangalorean curry. The menu pays wholesome tribute to the Konkan coast diet with a medley of Maharashtrian, Goan and uniquely Konkan delicacies.

Pithla Bhakri

We began our meal with a Prawns Bhujna (Rs 210). Our bhakri arrived after the dish but this was definitely the star of the meal. It had the right blend of Indian spices and juicy prawns. Yum. We opted for the Maharashtrian special Pithla-Bhakri (Rs 67) next. It was average. The wait for the mains was rather long but anticipating a seafood fiesta is always worth the wait.

The Goan Pomfret Curry (Rs 225), we were warned, would be really mild. We have had lots of Goan curries and they have mostly been smoking blends in all hues of reds. So, when this one came a pale mustard colour, we were taken aback. We found it almost completely lacking in flavour. To add to the disaster, the pomfret was under-cooked.

After this experience, we didn't expect our rice preparation to be beyond ordinary. Yet, our first spoonful of the Kolambiche Bhaat or Prawns Pulao (Rs 185) were so delicious that we completely forgave their earlier mistakes.
As we were leaving, the young boy enthusiastically asked us if we wanted to take a look at their kitchen. We hesitated for a fraction of a second. "It's very clean," he piped up, bright-eyed. It helped us realise that they had a passion to provide a reasonably priced quality product. Hopefully, the initial hiccups will iron out soon and The Coastal Shack will get buzzing.
