Last week's daylight murder of a cable operator in Bibvewadi after the police repeatedly ignored his pleas for protection from business rivals has left his family fearing for its safety. The family now wants to leave town as it claims the police have allowed to remain free the man they know to be behind the crime.

Cable operator Suresh Maruti Waghmare was murdered 200 metres from his residence on Wednesday, allegedly by a rival operator who wanted to take over his business. The murder was witnessed by Waghmare's younger brother Amol, who was injured in the attack.

Seven of the suspects were arrested, but Amol alleges that the key culprit, whom he says he saw hitting his brother, has still not been arrested.

"What is worse, this person does not even figure in the police FIR or list of suspects," said Amol.
Senior Police Inspector Bajirao Bhosle of the Sahakar Nagar police station said all arrests had been made and there were no more suspects.

Asked for a list of the arrested people, Bhosle gave seven names ufffd Santosh Rashinkar, Rajesh Raman, Rupesh Khopade, Data Kamble, Sanjay Kamble, Shekhar Malekar and Dayanand Shinde.

Missing from this list was Aglesh Raman, father of the arrested Rajesh Raman. Amol claims he was among those who attacked his brother.

"My younger brother Amol saw the murder with his own eyes. He told me clearly that this man was present there," said Navnath, elder brother of the slain Suresh. "But the police aren't arresting him or even ready to put his name in the list of suspects. With his son arrested and he roaming free, he can attack any member of our family to take revenge. We want to leave if the police can't protect us."

Navnath claims he visited the police station several times and requested the police to arrest Aglesh.
