The 21 artists participating in One Foot Squared had to be briefed by the curators three months in advance. After all, the dimension of the artworks had to be just 1’ x 1’ , a very limiting proposition. In the end, they came up with 200 artworks that are being showcased in the exhibition.

It includes a mix of abstract works, images of nature, works with calligraphy, figurative art, art on spiritual themes and even a foot painting. The artists have used pen and ink, pencil, mixed media, acrylic and water colours. The cost of the artworks ranges from Rs 3,000 to Rs 5,000.

Curator Bindal Shah speaks of this unique idea: “No one knows the value of space more than a Mumbaiite. Every square foot is worth its weight in gold. The concept was inspired by space constraints and we turned it on its head to produce affordable art. Interestingly, most of the works can be grouped to enhance a larger space.”

She adds that the end result is a visual delight with a homogenous feel, the common thread being the size of every piece on exhibit.

Her sister and fellow curator Payal Shah admits that working on a smaller canvas was a challenge. “To limit their ideas to a lesser space is often a hurdle. Some of these artists have been working with larger canvases and found it difficult to capture their skills in a smaller space. But they have overcome this challenge in an innovative manner,” she states.
