Apple gave fans the mini-moment they had been waiting for when it unveiled a smaller iPad to the world during a presentation at the California Theatre, but the company surprised the tech community by also updating the standard iPad with a fourth-generation iteration just seven months after its last update.
The smaller device will officially be called the iPad mini and have a 7.9-inch screen. “You can hold it in one hand, this isn’t a shrunken down iPad, it’s an entirely new design,” said Phil Schiller, Apple’s senior vice-president of worldwide marketing, who introduced the iPad mini in San Jose.
Display area on the iPad Mini is a third larger than that on its Android competitors, Schiller said, and 50 per cent larger than Android for surfing the Web.
“Others have tried to make tablets smaller than the iPad and they have failed miserably,” said Schiller. It will cost from $329 (Rs 17,500) to $659 (Rs 35,500) in the US and pre-orders begin on October 26.
Colourful mini smart covers will also be available to those who want to break free from the black and white monotonous design. The 4G model will come soon in the US and later elsewhere. The device maker also launched the fourth generation of its 9.7 inch tablets.
“This 4th generation is a powerhouse,” said Schiller. The tablet comes with a new chip, the A6X. It doubles the performance of CPU tasks. It comes in both black and white. The basic 16 GB with Wi-Fi version comes at $499.
At the end of the event, Apple CEO Tim Cook said, “We told you earlier this year you would see some incredible innovation from Apple this year, innovation only we could deliver. We think we delivered on that promise.”
