Smile at the West

Almost the whole of Indian tuned in to the Oscars, but how many of us know Pinki Sonkar of Dabai village, Uttar Pradesh. Pinki attended the much-talked about 81st Academy Award ceremony held at Kodak Theatre on Monday. Missed her, did you?

This could be because Pinki has little to do with mainstream cinema. She was a part of Smile Pinki, the 39-minute documentary, which won the Oscar for best short documentary film. This film, which highlighted the plight of children with cleft lips and other such deformities, is directed byu00a0 Megan Mylan. Yes, she is another Westerner, an American. She drew attention to a problem that all our Indian filmmakers chose to overlook.u00a0u00a0u00a0

We, in India, churn out the highest number of movies in the world and probably it outrages us that foreigners come and make cinema on varied topics from the Father of the Nation to the slums and win international acclaim for the same.u00a0u00a0

We, Indians, have no one to blame but ourselves. Because most of us our divided either fighting for or against pub hoping, loose women and pink chaddis.
