Smitten by Smriti

Contrary to the common perception of her being aloof and distant, we found actor-producer-social activist and BJP secretary Smriti Irani to be warm and candid with a whacky sense of humour. In fact, she pulled a prank on her publicist when we were least expecting it.

WHO: Smriti Irani
WHAT: Talking about her image
WHERE: At a studio in Sakinaka

After the interview, she called her up and told her that she was very upset with us because we had asked her controversial questions on her weight, career and had even suggested that it was time for her to retire. (Just for the record, we're never as audacious.) The frantic publicist, promptly called us up to vent, when Smriti took the phone from us and burst out laughing. We couldn't believe that this was the same woman who is known for her temper:u00a0u00a0

Short circuit
Well, I'm infamous for my temper (laughs), and people are quite scared of me. I remember at an awards function a few days back, Ronit (Roy) and I were on stage and two young artists were supposed to apply colour on our cheeks. The girls ran to Ronit and before approaching me, they paused a bit. So, my reputation precedes me. However, some stories have been hugely blown out of proportion, and I have done nothing to stop the rumours. Even the crew of my ongoing show were very apprehensive at the start. Slowly they came to know that my bark is worse than my bite.

The Tulsi effect
In fact I'm quite close to the onscreen characters that I've played. It's true that Tulsi was an idealist in the truest sense of the term, but I always tried to portrayu00a0 her as someone who was close to my actual personality. Well, the character taught me a lot of patience. Though I would not forgive a two-timing husband as easily as she did (laughs). On a serious note, Tulsi helped me widen my reach. She helped me win my audience's trust. It might sound funny but even now when the show's off air, random women come up to me to give me hugs or blessings

The Indian image
I come in contact with a lot of people, thanks to my work. That's what helps me build relations and progress. I have always been someone who has grabbed opportunities. At times, my husband Zubin also asks me, Aur Kitna Aage Badhna Hai (laughs). But I am focussed and not too concerned about superficial things. What I wear is immaterial. I have never dressed to impress. And I think it's pointless to sweat out hours in the gym to get a great body, when I have better things to do. And I don't want to be dictated by what people say or feel about me.
