As per mutual agreement, it was decided that the BBMP and BMRCL would take up restoration of affected roads on a cost-sharing basis. While the BMRCL undertook restoration work below the elevated Metro stations, the BBMP had taken up renovation in surrounding areas.

Sidetracking?
"We have an agreement with the BMRCL and will take up restoration work around the station. BMRCL will reimburse 50 per cent of this cost. However, restoration work on the roads will be completed only by April next year," said BBMP Commissioner H S Siddhaiah.

The irony however, is that while BBMP is planning to take up restoration work by next month, parts of Trinity Circle Road, SV Road and Ulsoor, which were restored partly by BBMP and BMRCL, have already developed pot-holes.

First things first
BMRCL on the other hand chooses to let motorists and commuters suffer nonetheless as they have their own priorities. "We first have to complete the Metro project, which is our priority. Everything else will be done after that. We have taken up re-laying of road under a few Metro stations and the remaining will be completed in the next four to five months," said B L Y Chavan, BMRCL spokesperson. Meanwhile, town-planning experts are blaming the authorities for inconveniences caused to the common man in the name of development.

"It only goes to show the poor construction method adopted by the civic agency. Though roads have been re-layed, there is a technical flaw, which is causing potholes to appear within three to four months," said M N Shreehari, advisor to State Government for Traffic, Transportation and Infrastructure.

Patience test?
The torturous conditions of the roads continue to torment residents and day-by-day, they are losing every last bit of hope they have in the concerned authorities. "I travel by Ulsoor everyday and the last three years have been a nightmare. I don't think the BBMP cares about the common man or they would have first worked on the roads. Accidents on these stretches are a daily occurrence and I think it is nothing but apathy that is stopping these agencies from doing their duty," claimed S Sreekumar, a software engineer.

Speed certified
Meanwhile, the BMRCL has finally received the final speed certification from the Research Design and Standards Organisation. The operational speed will be between 32 to 38 km/h. "A final copy of the speed certification has been issued after going through this report. Our next step is to approach the commissioner of railway safety," said Chavan.
