Software engineer's death: Mumbai cops still clueless about killers

Policemen investigating the disappearance and brutal murder of 23-year-old software engineer Esther Anuhya have found a bag full of clothes within 200 metres from the spot where her body was found.

However, it is still not clear if the bag or the clothes in it belonged to Esther. The police have sent the bag to the Kalina Forensics Science laboratory for reports. Esther’s slippers had been retrieved from the same spot on Monday. The police have been on the hunt for the absconding accused, who raped and then killed Esther.

Since the body was recovered from the bushes at Bhandup (East), the police are suspecting the involvement of auto rickshaw or taxi drivers who are usually stationed outside the Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT), where Esther had dismounted from the train that brought her back to the city from her Christmas break back home. This was the first time that Esther alighted from the train at LTT — on her earlier trips back to Mumbai, she would get off at Dadar station.

However, on January 5, she alighted from the Vishakhapatnam Express at 4.34 am. Since it was still dark, she is said to have waited at the terminus till daybreak. An officer investigating the case said, “The safety measures she took might have worked against her.” He added, “On January 5, the sun rose after 7 am. Seeing a girl standing alone, the culprits got the time to plan everything. They may have lured her somehow and taken her away. We have been interrogating the auto rickshaw and taxi drivers since the time we found the dead body.”

In a desperate hunt for clues that would help them crack the case, the police officials have been making a slew of visits to the spot, which have led to the recovery of her mobile phone, her slippers and a blood-stained shawl. The police are not sure if the shawl belonged to Esther or one of her murderers.
