India's Somdev Devvarman eked out a tight 7-6 (5), 6-4 victory against Russian qualifier Mikhail Ledovskikh in the men's singles opening round of the Malaysian Open here yesterday.
It took 89th-ranked Somdev an hour and 39 minutes to overcome 25-year-old Ledovskikh, ranked 309th.
Somdev, who is returning from a shoulder injury, next faces Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis in a second-round clash. "I'll have to play really good tennis to beat him (Baghdatis) . I will have to play aggressively against him because if he gets on the front foot, he's very tough to beat," he said.
