Some relief for Mumbaikars as vegetable prices fall

Recent reports speculated that the halting monsoon in the northern, central and western parts of the country may escalate the cost of vegetables in the coming days.

However, the price of vegetables in the city may not follow the trend, and traders at the Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee (APMC) market in Vashi are expecting it to go down in the coming weeks, as the supply from Maharashtra and neighbouring states has improved in the last week.

According to traders, the price of vegetables like green chilli, capsicum, beans and cauliflower has drastically reduced within a day, after they received steady supply from Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and a few southern states on Thursday.

“Prices were high a couple of days ago due to poor supply in the market. A few parts of the state, including the Marathwada region, have not received sufficient rainfall, and, therefore, there was scarcity,” informed Sridhar, a vegetable trader at APMC.

However, on Friday, APMC at Vashi also received large quantities of vegetables from Nashik and Pune regions, bringing down their prices. Traders are confident that, in the next couple of days, the escalated prices shall further follow a downward trend, as rainfall has resumed in the state.
