The best things in life might come in small packages, but it's not easy getting that small package. As fitness instructor and owner of Watson Fitness, Zareen Watson says, "There's no easy way out except through exercise, which includes doing squats, lunges, Bulgarian squats, hip-extensions, single leg squats and leg squeezes."



Is there a workout for the perfect butt? "Each plan needs to be formulated according to body weight. For a man of average weight, six sets of 12, if no weights are being used. Women could start with three sets of twelve each," says Zareen.

Those hoping for superstar derrieres would do well to remember that there's a reason these exercises are unpopular. "They aren't easy. They take effort, and your hips and thighs will hurt after. I'd be lying if I said if any of these exercises are any star's favourite! But the results will show," says Zareen.

And the body gets smarter once you start exercising. "Once you get used to the grind, either the reps or weights need to be increased," says Watson. "What's important is that you need to make your general lifestyle more active."

What to eat

There is only so far one can go without controlling what you eat. And feasting on chocolate is not an option. "A balanced diet is key.

If you are hoping for specific muscle enhancement, then a high protein diet is essential. Fish, chicken and egg whites play an integral role. Vegetarians should include more milk, milk products and soya in their diet," says Richa Anand, chief dietician, Hiranandani Hospital.

For those hoping to gain weight for a fuller tush, OD-ing on sugar and butter won't do it. "Bingeing on fatty food isn't the answer. That's a myth. You can't let cholesterol levels go into a tizzy," says Dr Anand.

What you should do is eat six to eight meals every day, with about one gram of protein per kilo of body weight for those hoping to build muscle. "A focus on class I protein, which primarily means animal protein, is ideal for those opting for an intense muscle-building workout plan."

Shortcut to perfection

Diet and exercise aren't the only ways to a bootylicious booty. "Liposuction or implants for reducing or increasing the size of one's glutes are an option," says consultant cosmetic surgeon Lakshyajit Dhami.

The ideal waist to hip ratio for women is between 0.6 to 0.83, says Dr Dhami. For men, it should ideally be above 0.83.



"Men who work out a lot develop a 'hollow' in the sides of the gluteal muscles. So several of them opt for implants or have fat transferred to the area post-liposuction," says Dr Dhami, adding, "Most Indian women think that their bottoms are too large, and opt for liposuction."

Is having a large bottom related to high fertility levels? Fertility specialist Dr Faram Irani of Southern Cross Fertility Centre, says, "The bottom helps the body regain erect posture after stooping. The only other significance of this group of muscles is cosmetic."

We won't argue with that. Whatever else would our low-rise Levi's rest on?

Flat butt (men): Baggy pants will make your lower half look like it's caught in a parachute. Wear jeans that are fitted around the waist and include a high inseam. This makes the shape more prominent. Straight-legged pants will also draw attention away from your backside by keeping the part underneath your legs in proportion to your hips, waist and butt.

Big butt (men): Avoid pleated trousers. When wearing less casual attire, avoid high-waist pants; the extra height can make the bottom look long.
