What’s the USP of the film?
The film is about an underdog — it’s the classic ‘David and Goliath’ story. It has great performances from Swanand Kirkire, Raghav Juyal, Smita Jaykar and Anupam Kher whom you see in a totally different role. It has an unusual cast.
Ali Fazal, Rhea Chakraborty and Raghav Juyal in a still from the film Sonali Cable
What made you choose Rhea Chakraborty as the main lead?
We wanted a fresh face for the role of this young Maharashtrian girl. We auditioned a number of girls, Rhea was the best of the lot. We conducted several workshops for the cast and crew for eight weeks.
What’s the story all about?
Sonali Cable is the story of a spunky young girl who runs a cable Internet service centre. She is a high school pass-out, who employs boys from her area to set up her business of providing Internet facility to local households. She gives personalised services as she is well acquainted with everyone. Then, another firm enters the business and tries to capture the market. This girl can’t bear the thought of her business shutting down and decides to put up a fight along with her friends.
How did you think of this subject?
Around five years ago, I had to urgently send a script to my production team at night. My Internet wasn’t working and I was very frustrated. Broadband services had just started then. I called the service provider at night and a girl named Sonali received my call. She had hired some local boys who would help her in her enterprise.
She blasted them over the phone and rectified the problem. I was quite fascinated by her situation and developed a story around her enterpreneurial and fiery persona. Her passion truly motivated me.
>> It is the first film from the Sundance-Mahindra script lab to be made into a film. The director, Charudutt Acharya is a FTII pass-out with vast experience in writing TV shows.
