FOR a change, UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Gujarat CM Narendra Modi have a common target to pursue.

The UPA is already miffed with IPL chief Lalit Modi over the controversy which made things ugly for Minister Shashi Tharoor, and for the government.

Also upset with Lalit Modi is Narendra Modi as his state failed to get an IPL team, after seeking Lalit Modi's guidance in the bidding process.

A few crores short

"There was talk about two new franchise teams bidding for the IPL," said Gujarat Cricket Board's ex-president and senior Congress leader, Narhari Amin.

"When Lalit Modi came to Sardar Patel (Motera) stadium, he met Gujarat Cricket Board's Vice- President and Home Minister, Amit Shah, and Gautam Adani, who bid for the IPL team.

Lalit Modi guided them about the bid amount, besides other formalities," he added.

However, Adani's bid for Rs 1,400-1,450 crore was outdone by Sahara's bid (Rs 1,702 crore) and Kochi's (around Rs 1,530 crore).

Sources said a meeting was arranged between Lalit Modi, Amit Shah and Gautam Adani, at senior BJP leader Vasundhara Raje's behest. Raje is said to share a good relationship with Lalit Modi.

"Gujarat had even conjured up names for its team. It was an embarrassment that an influential person like the chief minister failed to get a team ufffd This, after following Lalit Modi's advice," added Amin.

His attempts to get the team for Gujarat roped him into the controversy and even Narendra Modi was upset for not getting the team.

BJP spokesperson for Gujarat, Jay Narayan Vyas, said "Satyajit Gaekwad, who created the row by saying that Lalit Modi was forcing them to get the team to Gujarat, has said the issue has been sorted out."
