In the backdrop of affiliated colleges lacking minimum basic requirements, the University of Pune (UoP) has, at last, decided to put its foot down. In the new academic year, the UoP is going to initiate its first-ever academic audit of all 638 colleges and make the affiliation rules stringent.

Soon, colleges will have to go through academic audits

“For the first time, UoP is introducing a comprehensive exercise through which expert committees will take stock of every college,” said Dr W N Gade, vice-chancellor of UoP.

“The main cause of this audit is to check if the colleges are maintaining the expected quality or not. Unlike the Local Inquiry Committee (LIC), we are directly appointing deans, HoDs and Board of Studies Directors of all subjects on the audit committee,” he added.

According to Gade, the procedure of forming the audit committees is almost over and will be put in action soon.

“Academic audit is the need of the hour. The audit will include detailed report of each and every college,” told Dr V B Gaikwad, director, Board Of College and University Development.

“The audit will check all facilities in a college. It will not only look at the infrastructure but also check the academic environment of the institute,” he said.
Asked how the audit will differ from LIC, Gaikwad replied, “The academic audit will have a specific marking scheme. The auditors will have to give marks on each factor while auditing any college.”u00a0

11 MEd colleges shut down this year
In the current academic year, the UoP has shut down 11 MEd colleges that didn't meet the teaching requirements. “We have already tightened the affiliation norms and sufficient teachers having required qualification are the basic requirement. All these colleges who faced the action lacked enough qualified teachers,” said Dr V B Gaikwad, director, BCUD.u00a0
