Sprint points, Feature failure leave Narain with mixed feeling

Narain Karthikeyan is relieved to be back among the points with his sixth place finish in the Sprint Race but says the mishap in the Feature segment left him with mixed emotions from the Portugal leg of A1 GP.

"I have mixed emotions about the day," the ace driver said. "We had two great races today. Unfortunately due to a wheel bearing failure, we did not finish the feature race, but the race pace of the A1 Team India car in both races was fantastic," he said.

Starting ninth on the grid at Algrave, Portugal, Karthikeyan finished sixth in Sprint to add three points to the side's championship tally.

The Indian put up an even a better show in the Feature race, clawing his way up to 12th place by the end of the first lap. With a pit crew doing a smart job in both the stops, the Indian cut through the clutter and rose to the fifth place.

But just five laps from finish, Karthikeyan experienced severe brake problems and with two laps to go, his car slid off the track in the braking zone of Turn 11 and into the gravel trap.

Inspection revealed it was a left front wheel bearing failure that put paid to his best potential finish of the season thus far.

He, however, was happy with the performance of the car. "We were running very strongly in the top 5 during the feature race, and the car felt fantastic to drive.

"My team of engineers and mechanics did a superb job all weekend long, and I really want to thank them for that.

"The next round of the championship is in three weeks in Brands Hatch in the UK, one of my favourite tracks, and where I won last year.

"I'm confident that the team can do the job again next time around and we will get the finish that we truly deserve," he added.
