Sri Lankans are shy people, says Sanath Jayasuriya

But Sanath who has given nightmares to many bowlers from across the globe is a little jittery about his latest dancing act in Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa on Colors. “Sri Lankan cricketers are not known for their dancing abilities. In fact, I have never even done a jig in my entire cricketing career,” says Sanath, who would love to learn Salsa. In a quick interview, he talks to CS about dancing, Bollywood and politics.

Who: Sanath Jayasuriya
What: On putting on his dancing shoes
Where: At a film studio in Goregaon

Step by step
I like to watch people dancing. I have always been a bit shy when it came to shaking a leg, whether it was at a party or a club. Even before coming on the show, I was very apprehensive about being able to manage it or not. As a community, Sri Lankans are shy people. I have been to pubs and discos with my teammates, but we never danced. My aim now is to dance well and make my fans happy back home. My wife is a bit worried though because I don’t have any prior experience!

Bollywood buff
Yeah, I do watch Bollywood films as and when I get the time. Hindi films are quite popular in Sri Lanka and are shown on every cable channel. Back home, we enjoy the song and dance sequences in Hindi films. I am a huge fan of Shah Rukh Khan and loved Don 2. Besides, I can identify all the main stars like Shah Rukh Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Salman, etc. I have also seen Madhuri Dixit’s films and love her grace, beauty and poise.

Staying fit
Well, life is definitely quieter and peaceful in Sri Lanka. I love cricket so I am playing in the Bangladesh and Sri Lanka Premier Leagues. I work hard on my fitness. Every day I go to the gym, run a few kilometres and do my set of exercises. So, physically I am in good shape. Rehearsing for six- seven hours in a day isn’t a big deal for me. As a cricketer, I know the value of practice.

Politics and me
My idea behind entering politics was to serve the people of my constituency. It is my aim to give something back to those who have loved and supported me so much. Politics is also a somewhat new ball game for me, but I am up for the challenge. I only want to give my best every time. u00a0
