Bengaluru firm gives a tech twist to wedding invites

When we click a website link sent on our WhatsApp by tarsinvitations.com, we are directed to another conversation page. The user on the other side greets us with 'Hey there' and goes on to say, 'We, Gaurav and Lavani, are getting engaged and want you to be part of the celebrations'. The next post is a cute selfie of the couple, after which, we are asked to click on either of the two options: 'When is the engagement' or 'Want to see more pics of you guys'. We click the former. What follows is a conversation where we receive the time, venue and dress code of the event, while we send in our RSVP with name and contact number. When we send a nine-digit mobile number by mistake, the reply is: please send a valid number. This may sound like a real-life conversation with the couple, but it's actually a chatbot doing all the work.

Launched three months back, the engaging chat-based invites are an innovation by Bengaluru-based company, Tars, which has developed bots for several other services in the past one year. "The idea is to find an alternative to paper invites and automate the experience, making it hassle-free and interactive, at the same time," says 26-year-old Ish Jindal, a graduate from National Institute of Technology, Warangal, who co-founded Tars with 28-year-old IIT-Kanpur graduate Vinit Aggarwal.

The invite requires users to choose options for the conversation to flow

Till date, the team has created the invitations, priced at Rs 25,000, for a dozen couples in Delhi, Gujarat and Mumbai. They can be shared across text-based social messaging apps. "The content is customised and interactive. For instance, some couples may want an option to share their story, some would like to send their photographs too. We also include options of RSVP where the guests can punch in their address, contact, etc, which are sent to the client via email notifications," shares 23-year-old Vikram Thomas, who is the business development head at the start-up.
