St John’s struck in just the 2nd minute of the game with forward Nikhil Mathkar finding the target with a long-range effort. But Diamond Jubilee struck back just seven minutes later to equalise with skipper Anish Lakhani’s shot beating the keeper.
Faizal Shaikh, the Goregaon outfit’s skipper then put his team ahead once again in the 16th minute.
St John’s dominated the proceedings in the second half and deservedly scored a third goal in the 40th minute to seal the game. Striker Alim Manasiya was the scorer.
“It feels great to enter the U-16 quarter-finals for the first time in six years. Now all we want is to play well and get promoted to Div III,” said goalscorer Faizal.
Meanwhile, 14-year-old Nikhil, who was playing in the U-16 team for the first time, said, “Both the teams got equal chances. It’s just that we got lucky and we scored. This is my first year in u-16 and I hope to score more goals for the team in the coming matches.”
