Want to know all about the sitar that is integral to Hindustani Classical music? This weekend, attend a three-day free sitar seminar that includes a panel discussion and a session to learn about its gharanas (styles).

Sitar maestro Shujaat Khan will inaugurate the seminar. This will be followed by a panel discussion. “Sitar makers from Miraj, Delhi and Kolkata and several dealers from Mumbai will take stock of the sitar industry and address problems related to instrument-making.


Known sitarist Dr Allyn Miner will also be present,” says Dr Suvarnalata Rao, Programming Head-Indian music and research scientist, NCPA. Six young scholars from London, Canada, USA and India, studying different fields of music, will present their research. Representatives of the seven sitar gharanas will make presentations and perform.
