Hurt after a scolding and beating by her teacher, a Class 9 student in Rajasthan set herself on fire in her school's premises, police said Thursday. She was said to be out of danger.

The girl has been admitted to a hospital and is undergoing treatment with 30 percent burns. Police have arrested the teacher.

The incident took place Wednesday at the Government Senior Secondary School in Tikad village of Rajsamand district, about 350 km from Jaipur.

"Pinki Sharma, 14, had a fight with some other girls in the school. The girls complained to the teacher, Laluram Meena," a police officer told IANS.

He added that Meena first scolded the girl and then started beating her.

"The girl, apparently feeling hurt, got kerosene from the school's store room, poured it on her and set herself on fire," said the officer.

"The teachers, students and parents rushed her to hospital. Her condition is critical due to burn injuries on neck, hands and other parts of the body, but she is out of danger," police said.

"On the basis of her statement to the police, Laluram has been arrested," the officer added.
